How to measure your face for the face shape calculator
You need a soft tape measure (a sewing tape is ideal), a mirror and about two minutes. Pull your hair back off your face and stand straight, looking ahead. Measure each line twice and use the average.
- Forehead width. Measure across the widest part of your forehead, from hairline to hairline at the temples, usually about halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline.
- Cheekbone width. Find the most prominent point of each cheekbone, just below the outer corner of each eye, and measure straight across.
- Jaw width. Start at the corner of the jaw just below one earlobe and measure to the same point on the other side.
- Face length. Measure from the center of your hairline straight down to the bottom of your chin. If your hairline has receded, start where it used to be, roughly three finger widths above your eyebrows.
Then answer the two questions about your jaw and chin. Run a finger along your jawline: a clear corner under the ear means angular; a smooth curve means rounded.
How the face shape calculator decides
The calculator turns your numbers into three ratios, each relative to your cheekbone width, which is the reference width in face shape systems:
- Length ÷ cheekbones separates short faces (round, square) from balanced (oval) and long faces (oblong).
- Forehead ÷ cheekbones and jaw ÷ cheekbones tell it where your face is widest: at the top (heart), in the middle (oval, round, diamond), at the bottom (triangle), or evenly (square, oblong).
- Jaw corners and chin separate square from round and oval, and heart and diamond from the rest.
Each shape has a typical profile for these five values. The calculator measures how far your values are from each profile and converts the distances into percentages. The closest profile is your face shape; a close second means you are a blend of the two.
| Shape | Length ÷ cheekbones | Forehead | Jaw | Jaw corners / chin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oval | about 1.5 | slightly narrower | narrower than forehead | soft / rounded |
| Round | under 1.3 | slightly narrower | slightly narrower | soft / rounded |
| Square | under 1.3 | about equal | about equal | angular / wide |
| Oblong | 1.6 or more | about equal | about equal | either |
| Heart | any | equal or wider | much narrower | narrow / pointed chin |
| Diamond | any | clearly narrower | clearly narrower | narrow chin |
| Triangle | any | narrowest | widest | usually angular |
Example calculation
Say you measure forehead 13.5 cm, cheekbones 14 cm, jaw 11.8 cm and face length 20.5 cm, with soft jaw corners and a rounded chin. Your face length is 20.5 ÷ 14 = 1.46 times your cheekbone width, your forehead is 96% and your jaw 84% of the cheekbone width. That is a balanced length, widest at the cheekbones, with a softer, narrower jaw: an oval face, with round or heart as the likely runner-up depending on the details.
Common measuring mistakes
- Measuring the jaw under the chin. The jaw width runs between the two jaw corners below the ears, not around the chin.
- Pulling the tape tight around the face. Keep the tape straight across, as if you were measuring a flat photo of your face.
- Starting face length at the eyebrows. Start at the hairline; starting lower makes every face look rounder.
- Hair in the way. Hair over the temples makes the forehead look narrower than it is.
Not sure about your numbers? The photo-based face shape detector measures the same four lines from a selfie and draws them on your photo, and the guide to how to determine face shape explains the mirror method.
Face shape calculator FAQ
How does the face shape calculator work?
It divides your face length and your forehead and jaw widths by your cheekbone width, adds what you tell it about your jaw and chin, and compares the result with the typical proportions of the seven face shapes. The closest shape wins, and every shape gets a percentage.
Should I measure in centimeters or inches?
Either. The calculator only uses ratios between your measurements, so the unit does not change the result. Just use the same unit for all four numbers.
Where exactly do I measure my jaw?
Measure from the corner of the jaw just below one earlobe to the same point on the other side, following the jaw bone, not under the chin.
Why does the calculator give a different shape than the photo detector?
Tape-measure results depend on where you place the tape, especially at the forehead and hairline. The photo detector measures the same points every time. If the two disagree, your face probably sits between those two shapes; read both guides.
What if I do not have a tape measure?
Use a piece of string or a phone charging cable, mark the length with your fingers and measure it against a ruler. Or skip the measuring and use the photo-based face shape detector.
