What is a round face shape?
A round face shape is about as long as it is wide. The cheekbones are the widest line, the forehead and jaw are only slightly narrower, and the jawline curves smoothly into the chin with no visible angle. Full cheeks often add to the impression of roundness.
Styling a round face is about adding vertical lines and height, and about avoiding extra width at cheek level. Small changes, such as moving a part to the side or adding volume at the crown, make a visible difference.
In numbers: length ≈ 1.0–1.3 × cheekbones · soft jaw.
How to tell if you have a round face shape
Look for these signs in a mirror or a straight-on photo with your hair pulled back:
- Face length is close to the cheekbone width (ratio under about 1.3)
- Cheekbones are the widest line; forehead and jaw are a little narrower
- The jaw has no visible angle; it curves continuously to the chin
To check with numbers, measure four things with a soft tape measure: forehead width across the widest part near the temples, cheekbone width across the highest points of the cheekbones, jaw width from the corner of the jaw below one ear to the other, and face length from the hairline to the bottom of the chin. Then enter them in the face shape calculator, or let the face shape detector measure them from a photo.
Round vs. similar face shapes
- Round vs. Square: Square faces have similar proportions but a clear corner at the jaw. Run a finger along your jawline: a smooth curve means round, a distinct angle under the ear means square.
- Round vs. Oval: Oval faces are noticeably longer than they are wide (about 1.5×). If your length is close to your width, you are closer to round.
- Round vs. Heart: A heart face has a wider forehead and a narrower, more pointed chin; a round face is even all around.
Best haircuts for a round face shape
Add height and vertical lines so the face reads longer, and avoid extra width at the cheeks.
Cuts that end below the chin draw the eye down and make the face look longer. Side parts and side-swept bangs break up the circle. Avoid chin-length bobs that curve in toward the cheeks, and avoid flat hair at the crown with full sides, which adds width exactly where you have the most.
Hairstyles for women
- Long layers that fall below the chin
- A long, asymmetric bob
- Side-swept bangs instead of straight-across bangs
- Volume at the crown (high ponytail, top knot)
Haircuts for men
- Pompadour or quiff with height on top
- Faux hawk
- Undercut with a longer top
- Short sides with an angular fringe
What to avoid
- Chin-length round bobs
- Center parts with flat hair at the crown
- Full width at cheek level
Glasses for a round face
Angular frames contrast with the soft curves: rectangular, square and wayfarer shapes. Frames a touch wider than the cheekbones make the face look slimmer. Small, round frames repeat the circle and are the least flattering.
- Rectangular and square frames
- Wayfarers
- Frames slightly wider than the cheekbones
- Avoid small, round frames
Beard styles and makeup for a round face shape
Beard
- A beard that is longer at the chin than at the sides (goatee, extended goatee, short boxed beard)
- Keep the cheeks trimmed tight
Contour and blush
- Contour along the sides of the face and under the cheekbones
- Highlight down the center (forehead, nose, chin)
- Blush placed higher and angled toward the temples
Treat all of these as starting points. Hair texture, the features you like most and your personal style matter as much as face shape.
How the detector recognises a round face
The face shape detector places 478 landmarks on your face, finds your hairline, and compares the whole outline of your face with thousands of labelled faces. Instead of one verdict, it gives you a percentage for each of the seven shapes. If round comes out on top but a second shape is close, read both guides: most faces are a blend, and the advice the two shapes share is the safest bet.
Round face shape FAQ
How do I know if I have a round face shape?
Measure your forehead, cheekbones, jaw and face length (or use the free face shape detector). A round face shape typically shows: face length is close to the cheekbone width (ratio under about 1.3); cheekbones are the widest line; forehead and jaw are a little narrower; the jaw has no visible angle; it curves continuously to the chin.
What haircut is best for a round face shape?
Add height and vertical lines so the face reads longer, and avoid extra width at the cheeks. Good options include long layers that fall below the chin and a long, asymmetric bob for women, and pompadour or quiff with height on top or faux hawk for men.
What glasses suit a round face?
Rectangular and square frames. Wayfarers. Frames slightly wider than the cheekbones. Avoid small, round frames.
Can a round face shape change?
Bone structure does not change in adulthood, but weight, muscle and aging change the soft tissue. A face can drift toward a neighbouring shape, for example from round toward square, over the years.
Is the round face shape common?
Every face is a blend, and most people sit between two shapes. The face shape detector shows a percentage for all seven shapes, so you can see how strongly you lean toward round.
